January 7th, 2009

What should I look for when applying for a credit card account? Im mostly going to use it for big time emergencies when im low on cash or something. I dont want it to be high in interest rates and things like that, definitley don't want to be in credit card debt.

How to get first credit card?

January 6th, 2009

I have been to all the stores (sears, JC Penny, etc) I have also tried applying with my bank and capital one. I can not get approved anywhere. Please, I want to start building my credit and I am only looking to be approved for a small amount. If anyone knows a good first card, please let me know!!
I am 18. I have a checking account with a debit card. But a debit card doesnt raise your credit. I have already tried stores.

Chase gave me my first credit card outside of my bank.

But then that was after already having my bank credit card and a car payment, so you MAY need to build credit up. But try chase, you'll probably get approved for like 500. (I'm assuming you're 18 with no credit)

Which credit card gives you the best rewards?

January 6th, 2009

I tend to use one credit card to charge all my expenses each month and then pay it off at the end of the month. There are sooooo many credit cards out there and I was wondering which one gives the best rewards back. What card do you use, and what type of benefit do you get for using it? I don't care if it is for airline miles, cash back (a percentage) or some sort of point program. I was just wondering who is using what card and why?? Thanks!

I would suggest staying away from airline cards because the way airlines are cutting back on their benefits, you may never know when they'll cancel their mileage programs. I was browsing through the following site and there seems to be some very good cash back cards. That's the best way to make your money back without having to figure out what points are actually worth. See if you like any of them.

How do I go about getting my first credit card, and what are some of best incentives I should look for?

January 5th, 2009

I'm 25, have good credit anyways from loans, and financing purchases, but haven't hard a card yet.

Get one that makes you pay in full every month (like American Express.) And use it only if you can pay it off every month. Otherwise it is a black hole that will suck your financial house dry. You absolutely must set limits for yourself. People get in $30,000 to $100,000 without even noticing. And don't fall for the transfer for 0% scheme. The first time you are 1 day late the rates go to the maximum (over 25%).When you buy on credit you pay more for what you are buying. Why pay more?
To establish good credit have no more than 2 credit accounts, never ever be late with a payment, and pay off as soon as possible (not the minimum payment–you'll be a slave to it for the rest of your life). If you do that it makes sense to have credit so you have a good credit rating for big purchases like a car or house that you cannot pay in cash. But the less you spend on credit the more you have to spend without all the interest–or better yet, talk to a financial counsellor or just save in an interest free retirement or investment account. No matter what your age.

Can you get cashback on a credit card?

January 4th, 2009

OK so money is REALLY low right now, and I had a thought of going into a shop and buying some random thing so I can get cashback from it.

But…. there is basically sod all in my current account til payday so I can't use my debit card, but what about my credit card? Can I get cashback with that too? I've never tried with that before. Thanks
OK thanks guys… the thing is I'm too scared to try withdrawing from a cashpoint cos the last time I tried that it swallowed the bloody thing and I had to wait another week for a new one! :S

No, you can only get cashback with your debit card. Don't even try using your credit card in a ATM to withdraw cash, unless you want to pay interest from the date of the withdrawal!
