After getting my first credit card after a messy divorce, what's the best way to improve my credit rating?
I have a regional gasoline card but no other credit besides the above.
Pay off the card in full every month. You also may want to look into getting a secured loan. The mix of credit you have (loans and cards) affects your score.

You don't need to pay the balance in full every month but make payments on time, however paying your balance in full every month helps keep you out of trouble.

Use it, but pay it off IN FULL, EVERY MONTH!
That will help you build a strong credit rating.
Don't get any others, just the one!

apply for a mastercard with a limit of like $500.00 and use it to buy stuff online when you shop and order stuff through the mail. then pay on it a little every month and you will earn a good credit score. once you pay that off, they will offer you a better credit card in the mail and so on and so on until you are considered grade a material on credit. good luck.

Pay off the balance or keep it small for the time being on the Gasoline Credit Card.
UNFORTUNATELY — this is one of the problems with all divorces — the Credit Ratings DO SUFFER — and the one suffering the most is the party that is responsible.
One of the suggestions I make at this time — use the Free Federal Requests — do a single Credit Reporting Agency every 4 months — and CHECK CAREFULLY the Credit Report — to make sure that YOUR EX has NOT opened ANY NEW ACCOUNTS with your information (my own ex did this — and I had to place Fraud Alerts on all of my Credit Reports and with all Credit granting Agencies).

My ex assumed my identity AFTER the divorce, and caused me financial harm. This is VERY SERIOUS — so do check your Credit Reports each year.

The most important thing is to pay your payments on time. I suggest you pay the card off in full each month to avoid paying high interest.
