A few of the better rewards cards include the American Express Blue Cash card (up to 5% in some categories, but tiered), the Citi Driver's Edge card (6% in some categories in the first year), Fidelity Signature Visa (1.5% cash back on all spending), and the Capital One No Hassle Miles Ultra for Professionals card (approx. 2% reward on all spending as airline tickets, though Capital One's reputation for customer service isn't as good as, say, American Express).

You can use this rewards calculator to see which rewards card will pay you the most for your normal spending profile:

The Costco American Express card pays back 2 percent and does not have an annual fee. In addition, Costco also gives a rebate to Executive customers. We find it very beneficial.

I agree that credit cards are a great convenience if one uses them responsibly. We never pay any interest, and our cards are paid automatically from our bank account, so we don't even have to write a check or buy postage.

There may be other cash back cards. We had a card that paid "up to 2 percent" but it really only amounted to 1.4% on the first $10,000 of spending. We used that card until we charged $10,000 then switched to another. But now they only reward you with magazine subscriptions for which you have to pay. We use Master Card only if the store does nto accept AmEx.

I now have a Citi Dividend Pltinum Master Card that pays cash back, but they cut it down to a $300 limit per year.
